Innovators at Work is a contest to recognize talented people who not only have great ideas but also turn them into reality through their drive and their actions.
Wheeling down the highway, The Whale rolls along like a very expensive toy, the kind that would make a four-year-old’s eyes pop – a massive, rectangle-shaped, 230-cubic-metre tanker trailer painted black with bright green trim.
Yet for Alberta businessman Lonny Thiessen, it’s serious, save for the name.
The Whale is designed to double the hauling and heating efficiency of mobile tanks used in the energy sector, mainly for fracking.
When he was 22, Lonny Thiessen started Western Manufacturing, a company that builds oilfield tanks, with a $1,000 investment. He launched it in 2008 – right as the market tanked and profit disappeared from the energy industry. For a while he had one customer. About three years later, though, Thiessen has made up for that.
There can be no denying the pioneering spirit that has turned Western Manufacturing Ltd. into a Canadian success story. Owner Lonny Thiessen started the company as Westfab in 2008 with a $1,000 investment. Already, the company has expanded to two locations and roughly 36 employees.
"We started pulling some work in, and it is common in our business for the customer to pay a deposit upfront," Thiessen says. "We were careful with cash flow and never got more capital than that initial $1,000, other than deposits. Today, we're a company with no borrowed money."
For the past 15 years, the Fast Growth 50 program has been the most prominent ranking of Albertan businesses with significant growth in revenue, assets, capital expenditures and employees over a three-year period. Produced byAlberta Venture magazine with the assistance of KPMG, this program is one of the most recognized business rankings in the province.

Western Manufacturing CEO Lonny Thiessen is a true Northerner – born and bred in the Grande Prairie area. And that lifetime of experience goes into his story and his company. He recently agreed to share a bit of each with NWB readers.
Our apologies. The word "hot" doesn't do justice to the young, fast-growth businesses honoured in these pages. Just to make it onto the tail end of this year's PROFIT HOT 50 ranking required two-year revenue growth of 351%—the highest in the list's 14-year history. And, amid an economic recovery so tepid that it hardly deserves that name, the average HOT 50 company grew by 1,450%.
Nobody knows everything, and everybody can learn something. Lonny Thiessen, the CEO of one of Canada's fastest growing companies, shares the importance of asking questions and sharing knowledge.
When Lonny Thiessen started Ledarco Industries in his early 20's, he had a lot of things going for him: connections with industry veterans, a supportive family, and ambition.
To say Lonny Thiessen's company didn’t get into high gear right away is to put things mildly. In fact, it took Western Manufacturing Ltd. about a year to land its first customer, and even then it was small beer by the standards of Canada's oilpatch.
Blame the timing. Thiessen, who was 22 at the time, launched his oilfield tank manufacturing firm in October 2008 — right in the teeth of a nasty contraction in the energy sector. The Grande Prairie, Alta.-based company won just a single modest contract during its first year. But the slump also helped the struggling start up by forcing some major players out of its niche, leaving a big hole. When the energy industry came roaring back, says Thiessen, Western’s president and CEO, "the business blew wide open."
The leaders of the PROFIT HOT 50 companies honoured here have pulled off a remarkable feat. They've proven that even in today's stop-go economy, you can achieve go-go growth.
